Sansevieria or mother-in-law's tongue is a genus of ornamental plants that is quite popular as a decoration for the inside of the house because these plants can grow in conditions with little water and sunlight. Sansevieria has tough, succulent , erect leaves with a tapered tip.
Sanseviera is known as the tongue-in-law plant because of its sharp shape. Sanseviera is not only an ornamental plant, but also has benefits for nourishing hair, treating diabetes, hemorrhoids , and malignant cancer . While the fiber is used as a clothing material. In Japan , Sanseviera is used to deodorize furniture in rooms.
Compared to other plants, Sanseviera has the privilege of absorbing toxic materials, such as carbon dioxide , benzene , formaldehyde and trichlorethylene .
Sansevieria is divided into two types, namely the type that grows elongated upwards with a size of 50–75 cm and the type with short circular leaves in the form of a rosette with a length of 8 cm and a width of 3–6 cm. The long group has tapered leaves like blades, and because of this there are those who call Sansevieria a sword-sword plant.
This plant has thick leaves and has a succulent water content , so it is drought resistant. But in humid or wet conditions, sansiviera can thrive.
The color of Sansevieria leaves is diverse, ranging from dark green, light green, grey-green, silver, and a combination of yellow -white or yellow - green . The motifs of the grooves or lines found on the leaves are also varied, some follow the direction of the leaf fibers, are irregular, and some are zig-zag.
The specialty of the mother-in-law's tongue is that it has a high adaptability to the environment. NASA research in collaboration with ALCA has found evidence that this plant is naturally able to reduce this pollution.
Based on the type, there are two types of sansevieria, namely the first, namely purebred sansevieria/species, while the second is a type of cross/hybridation which can be called a hybrid type of sansevieria.
From this hybrid form, sansevieria will be created with different physical and character from the parent or what is often called a hybrid species or hybrid sansevieria. Sansevieria mutations can also occur from propagation via leaf cuttings
