When heated it can expand up to twenty times its original size.
The expansion, causes the perlite to become lighter in weight and the ability to absorb moisture on its exterior.

Sponge rock is a very common ingredient in orchid mixes, and other plant soil medias, for several good reasons:
The expansion creates a neutral pH with many small cavities and closed cells
Sponge rock decreases compaction of the media, increases aeration, but retains some vital moisture.
It is sterile, which makes free of insects, disease, and seeds.
The heating creates air passages that provide excellent drainage and aeration in orchid media mixes
It is often used in rooting cuttings to create a stronger root, in soil mixes provide a looser and well-drained soil.
